EMERGENCE
A collection of ceremonial vessels that reimagine ancient pottery in wood, where expressive handles and details emerge through turning and carving, and soot-darkened surfaces suggest a rich history unearthed.
At the lathe, each blank is mounted in a way that best utilizes grain direction in regards to the final orientation and proportions of the piece. Starting at slow speeds, the rough cylinder is made perfectly round before introducing curves and design elements. Intentional excess is left as required by handles and details that will be carved away later.
TURNING
Beginning with the intentional excess left from turning, rough carving starts with a power carving disc on an angle grinder, allowing material to be removed quickly and efficiently. Dremels, rasps, and files then soften and refine the remaining form, gradually shaping the surfaces. Final details and precise curves are defined using knives, chisels, and gouges.
CARVING
The surfaces are darkened with a handmade soot paint created from the vessels’ own offcuts and shavings, which are burned and returned to the work as pigment. Worked into the grain in layered applications, the soot settles into the wood rather than resting on top, creating a deep, mineral black that suggests a rich history unearthed.
