Emergence - Saranac Art Projects
Emergence invites artists to consider what it means to come into being: to rise, unfold, or break through. In biological terms, emergence describes how complex systems exhibit new properties or behaviors that are not present in their individual components. These emergent properties arise through interaction- between cells, organisms, or ecosystems- creating a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts.
At a time of layered change—climatic, social, psychological, and political—art becomes a lens through which we can observe, question, and shape new ways of seeing and being.
Alongside many other beautiful and provocative works, Dinos will be featured. This piece invited a reimagining of my work, both in aesthetic and technical challenge. As with all my pieces, they are created in a subtractive fashion: beginning with a rough blank of timber that is slowly turned and carved away allowing details to emerge. The finish is a soot paint derived from the burnt remains of the wood, reintegrated into the surface.

I will be showcasing a wide offering, ranging form simpler bowls to intricate handled vessels. Many new works will feature a new surface treatment I have been exploring utilizing a homemade soot paint derived from the burnt offcuts and shavings of the vessels themselves.
The Symposium
Central to Ancient Greek culture, the Symposium was a social and intellectual gathering of shared conversation, merriment, and wine, where each drinking vessel played a vital role in shaping the rhythm of the evening. This collection draws from historical pottery forms whose beauty and function transcend time, reimagining them in a contemporary context through locally and sustainably sourced timber that reflects the region’s diverse forestry and honors both ancient legacies and the organic nature of working green wood.

The Grain Mill will be showcasing the new Symposium Collection, a body of work representing further exploration into ancient pottery. Showcasing forms commonly found at ancient Greek gatherings, called Symposiums, where intellectual conversation was fueled by consumption of wine. This collection displays a large range of such drinking vessels, both large and small, and represent my finest works to date.
