Process and Technique
Collection Galleries
I am a Spokane, WA based woodturner specializing in revival of ancient vessels and forms into wooden pieces that invoke an equal sense of antiquity and modernity. Great respect is paid to the timeless forms of cultures past, both in technique and finish, and to the species of timber chosen for each form.
Each vessel begins as a recently felled tree, whether through storm or safety. As such, the wood often has an exceptionally high moisture content and is considered “green”. Working with green wood offers a dust free working experience, but more importantly causes natural movement and undulations in the wood as it dries. These movements allow the life of the tree to shine; the structure and layout of the trees growth rings provide organic curves, knots develop characteristic cracks, and burls offer the extremes of warping.
The chosen section of tree is processed into a semi round shape before being mounted on the lathe. Following reference images and sketches, the initial form is turned through the use of various gouges. And because the handles are integral, large amounts of material are intentionally left behind to later carving and shape. Then, the initial shape of the handles are carved by hand using knives, chisels, and rasps. Only then is the vessel hollowed out to establish its final wall thickness and shape.
Over the next 6-8 weeks the vessel is left indoors at room temperature to slowly dry and develop character. Once the shape and mass are stable, final shaping of the handles and smaller details can be completed. Sanding is also performed at this stage, smoothing any irregularities and preparing the surface for patination and finishing.
Creating an artificial age on the surface of wood takes many steps of coloring, oxidizing, and burning. Each step is carried out to different degrees depending on species, shape, and desired appearance. Finally, all vessels are finished with Tried&True Varnish Oil, an all natural, safe finish which develops a subtle matte sheen and layers of long term protection.
